In the highest tower of a castle wrapped in ivy and silence, where moonlight pooled like spilled silver across the stone floor, there stood a tiny mechanical clock no taller than a candlestick, its brass case tarnished to the color of autumn leaves and etched with vines that seemed to grow a little more each night. Her hair silvered like frost creeping across a windowpane, her eyes grew soft with old hope, yet still she waited, and still the small brass sentry ticked on beside her, unwavering, its tiny pendulum swinging like a lantern held steady against the dark, promising in its quiet clockwork voice that some things — devotion, patience, love — simply do not run down.
